Lawrence Lustig is one of the UK's leading sports photographers and the world's top pool photographer. Here are some of his favourite images from previous championships and the reasons why they are so significant...

"This photo had great news value as in the middle of his quarter final match with Johl Younger in the 2000 Championship, Fong Pang Chao started using his mobile phone, causing a storm amongst the other players"
"A brilliant reaction picture of Earl 'The Pearl' Strickland, one of the greatest players of all time, as he advances to the 2000 Semi-Finals with victory over Rodolfo Luat"
"Even the veins in Cory Deuel's neck are standing out as he puts everything into his break against local hero Rob McKenna in the 2000 Championship"
"The glint caught in the eye is the 'eye of the tiger' as Ismael Paez upsets the odds to advance to the 2000 final at the expense of Earl Strickland"
"All the emotion of the week came to a head with Mika Immonen breaking down in the arms of his beautiful girlfriend Helen as he
wins the 2001 title"
"The text book method of how to strike a ball with the head and body still go out of the window as the wonderful 'Dancing Bear' Alain Martel breaks without a still bone in his body....brilliant!"
"A study of the greatest cueman of all - Steve Davis - as he studies his opponent and the table"

2001 WPC FINAL - THE DAY IN PICTURES

The 2001 World Pool Champion was London-born Finn Mika Immonen who beat German Ralf Souquet 17-10 in the final.

The final was played out in front of a packed crowd at the Cardiff International Arena on July 22 with Immonen picking up the winners' cheque for US$65,000 and the impressive trophy.

Here's how the day unfurled....

German Ralf Souquet entered the arena....
....Closely followed by Mike Immonen....
...The early stages were even as Ralf trailed just 11-10...
....But the Finn began to fly as he took control of the match....
....And soon it was all over! Mika raced to a 17-10 victory....
....He received the trophy from Matchroom Sport's Barry Hearn....
....And held it aloft - his life's ambition was complete!....
